Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Erica Barbuto (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) notched her first collegiate hat trick, scoring three goals to lift the Gettysburg College field hockey team to a 5-3 non-conference victory over York (Pa.) College Wednesday afternoon at a sunny Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

Gettysburg (2-0) never trailed after scoring the game's first three goals.

Seniors Liz Baron (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) and Ashleigh Guise (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) added two assists each for the Bullets, who held advantages in shots (23-13) and penalty corners (13-10).

Two and a half minutes into the game, senior Kelly Spieker (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) gave the Orange and Blue a lead it would not relinquish when she pushed in a deflected shot off the goalie's pads. Barbuto followed up with her first goal when she scored in front of the cage, converting a left baseline pass from Guise with 13:37 on the first-half clock. Freshman Hannah Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) concluded the first-half scoring for the Bullets, taking an outlet pass from Baron and eluding the goalie with 4:32 showing. Jillian Brezgel scored for York with 3:55 left to make it a 3-1 game at the half.

Kirsten Bridgers made it a one-goal game for the Spartans when she struck with 24:32 remaining. But Barbuto gave her team some breathing room with back-to-back goals just 24 seconds apart. She scored off a corner with 18:25 left, when Baron redirected a corner pass from Guise. Barbuto then capped Gettysburg's scoring when she dribbled around the defense from the left wing to make it a 5-2 game.

Kailey Brewer pulled York to within gwo with 2:39 left, and the Spartans threatened with a penalty corner less than a minute later. But the visitors were unable to get off a shot and the Bullets gained possession to put the game away.

Gettysburg picks up its schedule on Saturday, when it visits Cabrini College in another non-conference match-up beginning at noon.
