GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Caroline Murphy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) became the 13th women's basketball player at Gettysburg College to reach 1,000 career points but it wasn't enough as Haverford College exited Bream Gym with a 55-52 decision Saturday.
Haverford (19-3, 13-3 CC) held off a furious rally by Gettysburg (14-8, 9-7 CC) by knocking down nine free throws in the final two minutes of play. The Fords set a program record for victories in a season with the win.
Murphy finished with a game-high 20 points, including 15 in the second half. She swished a jumper from the wing as time expired to reach 1,000 points exactly for her career. Murphy is the first Bullet to reach the milestone since
Courtney Fields '10 and
Caitlin Moser '11 both eclipsed the mark during the 2009-10 season.
The game was like a heavyweight boxing match as each team traded blows. Haverford jumped ahead by five (17-12) on a three-pointer by Elizabeth Lynch at 8:57, but Gettysburg stormed back with a 11-2 run to grab a 23-19 advantage with 3:16 before the break.
The Fords turned in the half's final seven points to lead 26-23 going into the locker room.
After a quick four points by Gettysburg to take the lead at the start of the final stanza, the visitors regained the upper-hand and held it for most of the frame. A 6-0 run by the hosts, capped with back-to-back lay-ups by junior
Samantha Pagel (Harleysville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), handed the advantage back to the Bullets at 41-38 with 7:12 on the clock.
Jacquelyne Pizzuto regained the lead back for Haverford by draining a three-pointer with the shot clock winding down at 6:12. Pizzuto added a running shot in the lane to push the lead to 44-41 with 3:47 remaining.

Rianna Doane (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) kept her team alive with another trey to make it 53-49 with 25 seconds on the board.
The Fords hit a pair of free throws with Gettysburg only answering with one free throw over the next 20 seconds. The Bullets pressed the ball on the final possession with senior
Cori Younghans (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) flipping the ball to Murphy for the final jumper as time expired.
Murphy finished 7-of-17 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the free throw line for her fifth 20-point effort of the season. She also grabbed nine rebounds and dished out four assists. Senior
Alyssa Isler (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) added eight points and Doane tallied seven points and three steals. Doane moved into fifth place on the program's all-time list for steals (183).
Lynch canned four three-pointers as part of a 19-point, nine-rebound effort. Shannon Smith added 11 points and six rebounds, while Nina Voith tallied 11 points and six rebounds.
Gettysburg remains in the fifth and final position in the conference playoff race with two regular season games remaining. The Bullets face Franklin & Marshall College (3-20, 1-15 CC) on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 6 p.m.
