Box Score BALTIMORE – Junior
Hannah Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) scored on a penalty stroke with 10 seconds remaining to lift Gettysburg College past Johns Hopkins University 5-4 in the regular season finale at Homewood Field Saturday night.
Gettysburg (8-9, 4-6 CC) received big games from several players. Fitzgerald turned in a pair of goals to pace the offense. Sophomore goalie
Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) recorded a game-high 17 saves, giving her 32 stops in the final two games of the season. Senior
Emily Van Horn (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) logged three defensive saves to add the single-game record to her program season and career marks.
Saturday's game started fast and furious with four goals in the opening 9:13. Johns Hopkins (7-10, 4-6 CC) picked up the first two as Leslie MacManus and Morgan Pothast scored in the first 2:23. Fitzgerald sliced the deficit in half with her first tally in the sixth minute.
Gettysburg maintained the pressure on offense and converted another opportunity three minutes later. After senior
Alex Calder's (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) shot was saved by Greta Helvie, junior
Tori Sankey (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) tapped in the equalizer at 9:13.
The Blue Jays found no way through the Bullet defense over the remainder of the half despite firing off nine shots and forcing 11 penalty corners. Mowery logged eight saves during the final 26 minutes of the first period with Van Horn adding her second defensive save of the contest.
In the meantime, Gettysburg took the lead on a goal by sophomore
Clare Nolan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Winston Churchill (Md.)) off a feed by Sankey at 23:47.
The Bullets added to the advantage early in the final stanza on a penalty stroke goal by sophomore
Lindsay Kraus (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) just two minutes into the frame.
Johns Hopkins mounted an offensive and despite five consecutive saves by Mowery, the hosts found the back of the cage on a goal by Austin Davis in the 51st minute. The Blue Jays tied the contest on a goal by Bridget Hampton just eight minutes later.
Mowery and Van Horn prevented any more damage down the stretch. The sophomore keeper tallied three saves in the final 12 minutes, while the senior defender picked up her school-record third defensive save of the game in the 67th minute. That set the stage for Fitzgerald to knock home the winning stroke for her team-best ninth goal of the season.
Johns Hopkins finished with a 25-20 edge in shots and a 19-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Van Horn's three defensive saves extended her season record to 13. She closed her career with 28 defensive saves, the most in school history and the second-most in conference history.
