Blue Jays hold on for 45-43 victory

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Johns Hopkins University turned in the go-ahead bucket with 24 seconds left and a last-second three-pointer was off the mark as the Blue Jays held on for a 45-43 win over Gettysburg College in the Centennial Conference opener Tuesday night inside Bream Gym.
 
Gettysburg (2-1, 0-1 CC) trailed for most of the first half and saw the deficit reach eight (18-10) on a lay-up by Sophia Way with 6:35 to go in the second quarter. The Bullets surged into halftime with senior Jessica Porter (Narberth, Pa./Lower Merion) netting six of her 11 first-half points during a 13-5 run. Freshman Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) knocked down a jumper with 12 seconds remaining in the second quarter to send the teams to the locker room tied 23-23.
 
Johns Hopkins (2-1, 1-0 CC) retook the lead on a lay-up by Beatriz Williams to start the second quarter. The Blue Jays eventually led 28-25 before another surge by the hosts. Gettysburg connected on a trio of three-pointers on consecutive possessions, two by Dorshimer and the middle shot by senior Kim Ryan (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City). A free throw capped a 10-0 run and set the score at 35-28 with 1:11 left in the third.
 
The visitors posted a 9-0 run down to the mid-point of the fourth period. Liz Tommasi accounted for the final seven tallies to push the Blue Jays ahead 39-35.
 
Dorshimer kept the Bullets alive with a pair of buckets and a free throw before a base-line jumper by Porter tied the game 42-42 with 1:47 to go. A turnover by Gettysburg set up Johns Hopkins for the go-ahead basket. Tommasi drove the lane and drew in the defense before dishing it off to Williams for the easy lay-in.
 
Dorshimer drew a foul on Gettysburg's ensuing possession and knocked down the second free throw with 12 seconds remaining. The Bullets sent Katie Clark to the line where she hit the first of two free throws to set the final score. A last-second three-pointer from the top of the key by Ryan caromed off the side of the rim as time expired.
 
Gettysburg held Johns Hopkins to 28.6 percent shooting from the floor. The Blue Jays scored 19 points off 18 turnovers and out-scored the Bullets 22-8 in the paint. Johns Hopkins held a slight 41-39 edge on the glass.
 
Dorshimer finished 6-of-13 from the field for a season-high 18 points. Porter picked up 13 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore Annie Reilly (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) posted seven points, five rebounds, and five blocked shots.
 
Tommasi paced Johns Hopkins with 13 points. Williams finished with 10 tallies and Janay Smith grabbed nine rebounds.  
 
Gettysburg has a week off before facing Dickinson College on Tuesday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m.
