Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – Freshman Tim Brady (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) made 14 saves and the Gettysburg College men's lacrosse team used a strong start and finish en route to a 12-6 victory at seventh-ranked Salisbury University in the latest battle of a storied non-conference rivalry Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.

The Bullets (2-0) never trailed after opening the game on a 6-0 run. The Sea Gulls (2-2) pulled to within 7-5 late in the third quarter, but that's when the Bullets used a 5-0 surge to pull away, which commenced with a 3-0 run in the final 1:06 of the period.

In a match-up that has seen the two sides meet in the national semifinals four times, Gettysburg defeated Salisbury for the first time since an 11-10 victory on March 28, 2009, when it snapped the Sea Gulls' 55-game winning streak. The Orange and Blue also earned their first win over a top-10 opponent since their 12-11 victory over Lynchburg on March 9, 2013. In addition, it was Gettysburg's first road victory over a top-10 team since the Bullets' 10-8 win over Dickinson on March 24, 2010.

Salisbury (2-2) outshot Gettysburg 39-34 but had a hard time denting Brady, who was making just his second career start. In the team's season opener on Wednesday, he became the first freshman to start at goalie for Gettysburg since Pat Vaughn '07 in 2004.

Sophomore long-stick midfielder Chris Palladino (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) aided the defense with three ground balls and two caused turnovers while senior short-stick middie Jack Harvazinski (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) also scooped three ground balls.

Senior Brendan Morris (Waccabuc, N.Y./John Jay) scored a career-high three goals while junior Jameson Smith (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) also notched three tallies to lead the offensive charge for the Bullets, who scored five of their goals inside the final minute of a quarter.

Senior Robby Maddux (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) contributed two goals and two assists while classmate Bijan Firouzan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) notched one goal and two assists.

Freshman Kyle Hewett (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) finished 12-for-19 on face-offs for the Bullets.

Thomas Cirillo registered two goals and two assists to lead the Sea Gulls while Dan Feeney played the opening 43:56 in goal, making two saves and yielding eight goals. Anthony Stavrakis played the final 16:04 and stopped two shots while giving up four goals.

Morris – who joined his twin brother, Jimmy, in the starting lineup for the first time at Gettysburg – put the Bullets on the scoreboard, striking just 1:44 into the game to kick off the team's early run. Junior Paul Werner (Westfield, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) followed up with an unassisted goal of his own with 11:30 on the clock to make it 2-0. That's how the score would remain until Smith got into the act, taking a dish from Maddux and scoring with 5:54 remaining in the opening stanza.

Gettysburg tacked on two goals in the final 10 seconds of the quarter. Smith converted unassisted with 10 ticks showing, then after the Bullets won the ensuing face-off, Morris beat the horn off another Maddux feed to give the visitors a 5-0 advantage at the end of the period.

The Bullets completed their game-opening run when sophomore Samuel Woodcock (Clifton Park, N.Y./Berkshire School) scored with 7:01 left in the first half.

Salisbury turned up the heat in the second quarter, reeling off 17 shots. James Burton broke up the shutout less than a minute after Woodcock's goal, kicking off a 3-0 spurt for the Sea Gulls. Cirillo and Kyle Goss also scored for the hosts to make it 6-3 with 1:21 on the clock. But Gettysburg reversed the momentum when Smith scored off a Firouzan assist with 56 seconds left in the half and give the Bullets a 7-3 lead at the intermission.

Salisbury scored the first two goals of the second half to nudge to within two following goals from Mike Kane with 13:43 left and Cirillo with 3:30 showing. However, that's when Gettysburg's two returning All-Americans – Maddux and Firouzan – took over. Maddux took a pass from Firouzan and scored his first goal of the season with 1:06 remaining, and after Brendan Morris' final goal of the day, Maddux struck with six seconds left to make it 10-5 heading into the final quarter.

Firouzan continued the surge when he scored 1:04 into the final stanza, and Jimmy Morris (Waccabuc, N.Y./John Jay) capped the run with 9:50 left. Carson Kalama set the final score for the Sea Gulls with 1:15 remaining.

Gettysburg continues its season on Wednesday, when it visits Messiah College at 3:30 p.m. in another non-conference tussle that was originally scheduled as the team's season opener on Feb. 21 but was snowed out.
