Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Samantha Wright (Darien, Conn./Darien) scored her first career hat trick and classmate
Hannah Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) posted two goals and two assists to help lift the Bullets' field hockey team to a 5-4 win over York (Pa.) College in its season opener Wednesday evening.
Gettysburg (1-0) and York (0-1) traded blows in a back-and-forth battle that persevered through an hour and a half lightning delay late in the opening half. With sophomore goalie
Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) posting a pair of early saves to keep the Spartans off the board, Wright produced the game's first score just over eight minutes into the contest, fielding a centering pass from Fitzgerald and sliding it past the goalie.
York was quick to answer as Ali Posey hammered a shot past Mowery to even the score at 10:32.
Following a strong defensive sequence that saw Mowery turn in a trio of saves, Wright struck again with Fitzgerald leading a breakaway and slipping it to her classmate for an easy score at 27:11. Shortly after, lightning was detected in the surrounding area and the game was halted.
Not long after returning to the field, York tied the game with Lindsay Nye controlling a long pass from Beth Patrick and pushing the ball into the goal.
Posey kicked off the second half by corralling a rebound and lifting a shot into the top of the cage to give York its first lead at 3-2. Gettysburg countered with its own rebound as Fitzgerald slipped the loose ball into goal to the tie score 3-3 at 43:53.
Hannah Fitzgerald '17 posted two goals and two assists against York.Luck was on Fitzgerald's side later in the period as the junior swiped a shot from the baseline that deflected off the keeper and into the cage. Less than two minutes later, Posey completed a hat trick following an assist by Holly Martin to tie the game yet again.
Wright provided the game-winner with less than seven minutes remaining. After making a nice move along the left side, she slipped past the defense and found a seam around the goalie for the go-ahead score at 63:32. Mowery stopped a shot by Nye with less than five minutes to go to preserve the win.
York held the lead in shots 24-20, while Gettysburg came away with more corners at 11-6.
