GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Hannah Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) scored her third career hat trick and the Bullets put a stamp on the end of the 2016 campaign with a 5-1 victory over Johns Hopkins University Friday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Already eliminated from a spot in the Centennial Conference playoffs because of a loss to Haverford College earlier in the season, Gettysburg (7-8, 5-5 CC) left nothing on the table in its season finale against Johns Hopkins (7-10, 3-7 CC). The seniors played a huge role in the victory, having a hand in four of the five goals and combining for 15 shots and seven saves.
Senior
Ronnie Bridges (Kingsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) set the tone defensively by halting a shot by Amy Hallowell in the opening minutes. Not long after, Fitzgerald put the hosts in front, dribbling the ball through the defense and slicing a reverse shot from the left wing into the right corner of the goal in the 12th minute.
Fitzgerald used a similar shot to pad the lead six minutes later, this time lifting the ball past the goalie and hitting the back of the cage.
Gettysburg held Johns Hopkins to just three shots in the opening half. Bridges picked up another save on a shot by Lucy Reider and junior
Kelly Reymann (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) halted the ensuing putback by Morgan Pothast to preserve the lead.
The goalies were busy early in the second half with the two sides combining for nine shots on goal in the first 11 minutes of the period. A shot by Fitzgerald was initially saved by Zoey Atabek, but freshman
Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) was right there for the putback for her second goal of the season in the 47th minute.
Johns Hopkins cut the lead to 3-1 as Clare Kavanagh redirected a pass from the top by Austin Davis on a penalty corner in the 59th minute.
Gettysburg charged across the finish line in the game's final minutes. Senior
Nina Diamond (Berwyn, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) recorded her team-best eighth defensive save of the season with 5:34 remaining to play. Diamond's season total ranks as the second-highest in program history.
The offense struck for a pair of goals in the final three minutes. Senior
Tori Sankey's (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) lead pass on the penalty corner set up junior
Philippa Lumsden (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) for a slam into the goal with 2:10 left. Gettysburg was awarded a penalty corner in the final seconds of the game and with time running out, Fitzgerald blasted her third goal past the Johns Hopkins goalie following a nice feed from junior
Lily Neibart (Morristown, N.J./Pingry).
Gettysburg finished with a 19-11 lead in shots and a 9-7 advantage in corners.
Bridges tied her career high with six saves. Fitzgerald closed her career fifth in career points (87), sixth in career goals (33), and second (tied) in career assists (21) at Gettysburg.
The victory also marked the 150th for Head Coach
Barb Jordan in 14 seasons at Gettysburg.
