GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Lindsay Kraus (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) turned in her first career hat trick to lift Gettysburg College to a 9-1 season-opening victory over DeSales University in non-conference field hockey action at Shirk Field on Saturday.
Six different players reached the scoring column for Gettysburg (1-0), which won its opening game for the sixth-consecutive season. Kraus showcased a different shooting technique on each of her tallies beginning with a redirect on a pass from junior
Philippa Lumsden (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) that made it 2-0 6:28 into the game.
The Bullets waltzed into halftime with a 4-0 lead following a feed from senior
Hannah Fitzgerald (Larchmont, N.Y./Mamaroneck) to junior
Casey Eck (Medford, N.J./Shawnee).
Fitzgerald opened the second half with a smash into the back of the box. Less than two minutes later, sophomore
Victoria Umbach (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) converted a pass from senior
Samantha Wright (Darien, Conn./Darien).
With the Bullets ahead 6-0 in the final period, junior
Tori Sankey (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville), who scored earlier in the contest, set up along the base line for a penalty corner. Sankey's lead pass went right to the left wing where Kraus was waiting to flick a high-arching shot over the goalie for her second tally.
Kraus polished off her hat trick with a reverse slap from straight on with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game. Wright added her second tally of the game by knocking in a high pass from freshman
Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) in the 60th minute.
Gettysburg finished with a 29-8 advantage in shots and a 15-5 edge in penalty corners.
Junior
Haley Mowery (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Northern) played 48:34 without seeing a single shot on goal. Senior
Ronnie Bridges (Kingsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) stopped a pair of saves, while freshman
Jillian Caputo (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) made three stops during a late flurry by the Bulldogs.
Gettysburg returns to action with a home date against Catholic University on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 4 p.m.
