GRANTHAM, Pa. – Freshman Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) claimed his first collegiate title and the Gettysburg College wrestling team placed third overall at the season-opening Messiah College Invitational on Saturday.

Thompson claimed the crown at 141 pounds with a perfect 4-0 mark. He was one of six Bullets to finish among the top four and helped Gettysburg total 75.5 points. Fourth-ranked Messiah won with 142.5 points and Lycoming College placed second with 90.5.

Thompson picked up a major decision (10-2) and pin (1:02) in his opening two matches before facing off with a pair of Messiah grapplers. He defeated Matt Darok 9-2 in the semifinals before edging Nick Nunez 10-8 for the title. Thompson is the first Gettysburg freshman to win a tournament title since junior Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) swept through the heavyweight bracket at the Washington & Lee University Invitational on Jan. 9, 2016.

Triandafilou posted Gettysburg's next-best finish with a runner-up showing at heavyweight. The top seed in the bracket, he cruised to a pair of decisions before edging Dominick Johnson of Liberty University 3-2. The sixth-ranked wrestler in Division III, Triandafilou was upset in the finals by Lycoming College's Garrett Wesneski, a transfer from the University of Maryland, 6-4. It was just Triandafilou's second career regular-season setback.

Freshman Robert Garnett (Springfield, Va./Thomas Edison) and senior Anthony Puca (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) each placed third in their respective weight classes. Garnett dropped a close decision in his collegiate debut at 141, but he ran the table with six wins in the consolation bracket. The first-year picked up his first collegiate victory with a 36-second fall and won four matches by decision, including an 8-2 win over Trey Harkness of Ursinus College in the finale.

In his first taste of action since the 2016 NCAA Division III East Regional, Puca turned in a strong performance in the heavyweight bracket. The senior won his first two bouts by major decision (15-3) and decision (3-2) before dropping a major decision (9-0) to Wesneski. He bounced back with a pair of close decisions in his final two contests, including a 3-1 overtime victory over Liberty's Dominick Johnson in the consolation final.

Senior Lenny Ogozalek (Summit Hill, Pa./Panther Valley) and junior Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) advanced to the third-place match, but were not able to compete because of a new rule limiting the number of matches an individual can wrestle in a day at six. After suffering a one-point loss in his opening bout at 125, Ogozalek tore through the consolation bracket with four first-period pins and a decision. He met his six-match limit with a two-minute fall against Austin Jones of Elizabethtown College in the consolation semifinals.

Kowalski won his opening match by technical fall (19-3), but suffered a second-period pin in the quarterfinals. He ran off a fall (1:50) and two major decisions (16-2, 8-0) to reach the consolation finals. His opponent, Zachary Goranson from Ursinus College, met his six-match limit in the consolation semifinals.

Senior Louie Carusillo (Pequannock, N.J./DePaul Catholic) went 4-2 and advanced to the consolation semifinals at 133 pounds. Carusillo recorded three falls, including a 29-second victory over Josiah Fitzjerrels from Wheaton College.

Freshman Marc Larson (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) and sophomore Austin Roskos (Lawrenceville, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) each scored three wins. Larson won his collegiate debut by decision (11-5) and posted a fall (1:17) and major decision (11-1) in the consolation bracket at 149 pounds. Roskos earned a pair of three-minute pins and added a medical forfeit in the 165 consolation bracket.

Four freshmen won at least two matches. Alex Shaffer (Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) earned a major decision and pin at 125, freshman Danny Ziegler (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) posted two falls at 141, Nolan Smith (Olney, Md./Paint Branch) earned a pair of decisions at 141, and Patrick Briody (Lattingtown, N.Y./Locust Valley) logged two decisions at 149.

Gettysburg's season continues at the Ursinus Fall Brawl next Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
