Gettysburg finishes fourth as a team

Brackets | Team Scores

GRANTHAM, Pa.
– For the second consecutive year, juniors Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) and Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) swept the competition on the way to individual titles at the Petrofes Invitational hosted by Messiah College.

After winning the 157-pound title last season, Kowalski moved up to the 165 bracket and won all four of his bouts, including a pair of wins over top-10 ranked opponents on Saturday. He was named the event's Outstanding Wrestler, a feat also accomplished by Gettysburg Head Coach Andy Vogel for Messiah in 2001. Triandafilou captured his third-straight heavyweight title at the Petrofes event with an overtime victory against the fourth-ranked grappler in the country.

Gettysburg placed fourth overall with 117 points on the strength of nine place-winners. The only teams ahead of the Orange and Blue were No. 6 Messiah (202), No. 22 University of Mount Union (193), and No. 24 Waynesburg University (127).

Seeking his first tournament title of the season, Kowalski ran off a pair of wins on Friday to set up a big semifinal match up with Jesse Gross from Mount Union. Gross, ranked ninth by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and fifth by D3wrestle.com, was handed his first loss of the season with a 3-2 setback to the Bullet junior.

A rematch with Messiah's Jeff Hojnacki, the No. 7 rated wrestler in the country, awaited Kowalski in the 165 finale. The two met in last year's championship at 157 pounds with Kowalski getting by the win on an injury default. In Saturday's go-around, the Gettysburg grappler kept his focus against the former All-American and held on for a 5-4 victory. Kowalski improved to 15-2 on the year.

Triandafilou was denied titles at the Messiah Invitational and Ursinus Fall Brawl earlier this season, but the junior heavyweight could not be stopped this weekend. After three dominating wins on Friday, Triandafilou opened Saturday with a 5-2 win over Penn College's Dylan Otis. Fourth-ranked Jake Evans awaited the Gettysburg heavyweight in the championship match. The two titans each managed escapes in regulation to send the bout to overtime. Triandafilou struck first in the sudden victory, turning an attempted grab by Evans into a takedown for a 3-1 victory. He improved to 14-2 this season and 16-0 all-time at the Petrofes Invitational.

Other Gettysburg grapplers that placed included senior Lenny Ogozalek (Summit Hill, Pa./Panther Valley) at 125 (fifth), senior Louie Carusillo (Pequannock, N.J./DePaul Catholic) at 133 (eighth), freshman Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro-South) at 141 (third), sophomore Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) at 149 (fourth), senior Quinn Merrigan (Canton, Mass./Canton) at 165 (sixth), freshman Mike Iodice (Flemington, N.J./Hunderdon Central) at 197 (fourth), and senior Anthony Puca (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) at heavyweight (sixth).

Ogozalek dropped his first two matches on Saturday before rebounding for a 9-3 decision over Messiah's Sean Redington in the fifth-place match. The senior improved to 15-5 this season. Carusillo clinched a spot among the top eight with two wins yesterday at 133, but he suffered losses in each of his two match ups on Saturday.

Thompson continued his strong debut season with his third-straight top-four finish at a tournament. The Messiah Invitational champ at 141 pounds, the first-year ran the table in the Petrofes consolation bracket with six consecutive victories, ending with a 10-3 decision over Messiah's Nick Nunez in the third-place match. Thompson improved to 17-3 on the year.

Devlin fell to in the semis to the eventual champion at 149 pounds, but he recovered for a decision win (5-2) in his first consolation contest. The sophomore dropped a 6-3 decision to Messiah's Adam Peris in the third-place match.

Merrigan reached the semifinals at 165 before falling to Hojnacki. He dropped a close 5-4 decision in the wrestleback semifinals and was unable to compete due to injury in the fifth-place bout.

Iodice made a nice run in the 197 bracket with two wins on Friday, but top seed and seventh-ranked Kyle Koser from Messiah ended the first-year's day in the championship bracket with a technical fall. Iodice came back with an injury default win in the consolation bracket and faced Muhlenberg's Gennaro Cerminara for the second time in the tournament with third-place on the line. Iodice won the first meeting 14-9, but the Mule grappler took the second by pin.

Competing up a weight class as he makes his way back down to 197 pounds, Puca picked up three wins in the heavyweight bracket, including an 8-3 decision over Muhlenberg's Scott Schaeffer on Saturday. The Gettysburg senior came up short by decision in his final two matches to finish sixth overall.

Gettysburg closes the opening semester with its first home appearance of the season next Friday, Dec. 8, against nationally-ranked Messiah. Opening matches are set for 7:30 p.m.
