Waynesburg Brackets | Washington & Lee Brackets
WAYNESBURG, Pa./LEXINGTON, Va. – The Gettysburg College wrestling team featured eight place-winners combined in two tournaments, including runner-up finishes by juniors
Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) and
Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) at the Waynesburg University Invitational on Saturday.
Gettysburg finished fifth out of 16 teams with six total place-winners at Waynesburg. Kowalski reached his second consecutive championship final of the season on the way to taking second at 165, while Triandafilou finished runner-up in his fourth heavyweight finals appearance of the campaign. Joining the duo among the top six were senior
Lenny Ogozalek (Summit Hill, Pa./Panther Valley) at 125 (fifth), freshman
Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro-South) at 141 (sixth), sophomore
Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) at 149 (fifth), and freshman
Mike Iodice (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) at 197 (fifth).
A small contingent of Bullets also travelled to the Jim Crytzer Invitational at Washington & Lee University. Freshman
Robert Garnett (Springfield, Va./Thomas Edison) produced the top performance with a fourth-place finish at 149 pounds. Freshman
Noah Struss (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) took sixth at 157.
At Waynesburg, Kowalski opened with a dominant run through his bracket, racking up three pins and a technical fall shutout (15-0) in his first three bouts. The junior, who came into the event ranked fifth in the nation by
D3wrestle.com, fell short in the bid for a second title this season as Chase Schmidt from the University of Wisoncsin-Eau Claire overcame a 2-0 deficit to win 11-4 in the championship match. Kowalski improved his record to 19-3 on the year.
Seeking his seventh career tournament title, Triandafilou was upended in the finals by a familiar foe. The junior, who came into the event ranked sixth, cruised through his first two matches with a decision (3-0) and fall (2:30). After a 13-6 win in the quarterfinals, Triandafilou punched his ticket to the finals with a 2-1 win over Gage Gladysz from Thiel College. A rematch with Waynesburg's Jake Evans awaited the Gettysburg grappler in the finals. Triandafilou won the first meeting 3-1 in overtime in the championship of the Messiah Petrofes Invitational, but Evans, ranked seventh in the nation, won the sequel by fall in the third period. Triandafilou's record moved to 18-3 this season.
Ogozalek and Iodice each ended their days with victories. After dropping his opening match, the senior padded his team-leading pin total with three in the consolation bracket, ending his day with a fall at the end of the first period of the fifth-place match. Ogozalek is 19-7 on the year with 13 victories by fall. Iodice made a run to the semifinals at 197 following a pair of decisions. After dropping his next two contests, he closed with a forfeit win in the fifth-place match.
Thompson placed for the fourth time in as many events this season. The freshman pulled out a 3-1 victory in overtime to begin the day and added a 6-4 victory in his next match. He dropped his next contest by major decision in the semifinals and was unable compete afterwards due to injury. Thompson improved to 19-4 on the year.
Devlin, sophomore
Traken Sutton (Wethersfield, Conn./Loomis Chaffee), and freshman
Phil Angelo (Summit, N.J./Summit) combined for nine wins in the 149 bracket. Devlin won his first two matches by fall and added a pair of decisions in the wrestleback. Both Devlin and his fifth-place match opponent met their six-match limit in the consolation semifinals. Sutton won each of his first two matches by decision, while Angelo won three consecutive decisions in the consolation bracket.
Freshman
Jordan Pinette (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) accounted for a pair of first-period falls in the 133-pound bracket.
Garnett recorded three wins on the way to his second top-four finish of the year at Washington & Lee. After winning his opener 5-1, the first-year recorded his first collegiate technical fall 19-4. In the semifinals, he dropped a close 1-0 decision to the eventual champion. Garnett rebounded with a 6-2 win in overtime in the consolation bracket before ending the event with a setback in the third-place match.
Struss earned a spot in the semis at 157 by scoring a pin in his first match. He fell by decision twice before an injury default in the fifth-place match. Senior
Jake Bracken (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard Westlake) picked up two wins by technical fall (15-0) and decision (5-3) in the same bracket.
Gettysburg hosts SUNY Oneonta on Thursday, Jan. 11, at 7 p.m.
