LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior
Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) captured his second consecutive heavyweight title to pace the Gettysburg College wrestling team at the Centennial Conference Wrestling Championships hosted by Washington and Lee University.
Gettysburg featured seven place-winners at the event and took fourth overall as a team with 56 points. Stevens Institute of Technology won its fourth consecutive team title with 100 points on the strength of six individual champions. United States Merchant Marine Academy and Washington and Lee finished just ahead of the Bullets with 61.5 and 56.5 points, respectively.
Junior
Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) narrowly missed his first conference crown with a close decision loss at 165. Senior
Lenny Ogozalek (Summit Hill, Pa./Panther Valley) finished third at 125 for the second consecutive year, while sophomore
Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) also grabbed third at 149. Freshman
Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro), sophomore
Austin Roskos (Lawrenceville, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central), and senior
Anthony Puca (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) each placed fourth at 141, 174, and 197, respectively.
Triandafilou gave Gettysburg its first repeat champion since
Andrew Goldstein '09 won three consecutive titles at 157 from 2007-09. The junior dominated his first two bouts, defeating Henri Behaeghel of Johns Hopkins University by technical fall 19-0 and downing Brendan Woody of McDaniel College by major decision 12-3.
The finals set Triandafilou against the only Centennial grappler to beat him this season, Victor Raigoza of Merchant Marine. The junior avenged the defeat, powering through for a takedown late in the third period to win 3-1. Triandafilou improved to 30-5 on the year.
Kowalski came up with his second career second-place finish at the event. The runner-up at 157 as a freshman, the junior posted a pair of decisions 6-0 and 9-2 to reach the 165 finale. Kowalski saw his 13-match winning streak come to a close with a 4-0 setback to top-seeded Thomas Poklikuha from Stevens. The loss put the Gettysburg grappler's season record at 32-5.
Ogozalek began the day with a 7-3 decision over Jacob Reid from McDaniel College. A loss to top seed Chris Tan of Ursinus College came in the semis, but the Bullet senior bounced back in a big way with a first-period pin against Ethan Hartman from Washington and Lee. That fall was Ogozalek's 17th of the season and tied
Jake Dell '98 for the most in a season in program history. Ogozalek capped his day with a 6-2 win over Christian Vallis from Johns Hopkins in the consolation final. Ogozalek improved to 29-13 this season.
Last year's runner-up at 141, Devlin posted two falls and a technical fall on the way to third-place at 149. He blanked his opening foe 15-0 before getting pinned in the semis. The sophomore rebounded with a pair of pins in the consolation bracket, including a fall 35 seconds into the third period against Connor Joyce of Johns Hopkins in the consolation final. Devlin's season record now stands at 20-8.
Puca logged a pair of decisions in his return to the conference stage at 197 pounds. The runner-up at 197 as a sophomore, the senior tallied a 3-2 win in his opening bout before getting upended by eventual champion Gennaro Cerminara 5-1 in the semis. Puca rebounded for a 5-1 win in the consolation semifinals, but was unable to continue due to injury.
Thompson and Roskos made the most of their conference championship debuts with strong showings. After receiving a bye into the semifinals at 141, Thompson was upended by decision, but he bounced back for a 6-0 win over Daniel May from Merchant Marine. Lucas Escobar from Johns Hopkins denied the Bullet first-year a third-place finish with an 8-6 decision.
Roskos rebounded from a close decision loss in his opener to claim a pair of decision victories in the consolation bracket at 174. After beating Miles Gilliam of Johns Hopkins 9-6, the Gettysburg sophomore was stopped by Josh Smith of Stevens 7-1 in the third-place match.
Gettysburg closes out its dual schedule at York (Pa.) College on Saturday, Feb. 17, at noon.
