Kowalski, Ogozalek Reach Regional Semifinals

Senior Lenny Ogozalek set a new program standard with his 18th pin of the season on Saturday.

ROCKY MOUNT, Va. – Senior Lenny Ogozalek (Summit Hill, Pa./Panther Valley) and junior Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) each reached the semifinals of their respective weight classes on the opening day of the NCAA Division III Southeast Regional hosted by Ferrum College.

Ogozalek, Kowalski, and sophomore Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) remain in the hunt for bids to the national tournament. Ogozalek and Kowalski will wrestle in the semifinals at 125 and 165, respectively, while Devlin is working his way through the consolation bracket at 149 pounds.

Ogozalek began the day by setting a new program standard for pins in a season. The senior took down Thiel College's Cory Bable in 1:24 for his 18th fall of the year, topping the record he shared Jake Dell '98. He added a 12-9 decision to reach the semifinals where he will face off with Dylan Nuttall of York (Pa.) College on Saturday.

Kowalski posted a pair of technical falls on the way to the semis at 165. He won his opening match 16-1 and closed the second 17-1 to improve to 35-5 on the year. Kowalski will face off with fifth-ranked Jeff Hojnacki from Messiah College in the semifinal Saturday. The foes have met twice this season. Kowalski won the first meeting 5-4 in the finals of the Petrofes Invitational, while Hojnacki won the rematch 7-6 in a dual six days later.

Devin won his first match by major decision 12-2 before getting knocked to the wrestleback at 149. He rebounded with second-period pin and will square off with Zachary Wilson of Greensboro College in the consolation quarterfinals. Only the top three finishers in each weight class will advance to the national tournament.

Three other competitors picked up wins on the day. Senior Louie Carusillo (Pequannock, N.J./DePaul Catholic) made the most of his regional debut with his ninth fall of the season in his opening bout at 133. Freshman Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) also won his regional opener 8-0 over McDaniel College's Jahmally Willie.

Senior Jake Bracken (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) picked up a pair of wins at 157. Bracken won his opening match 2-0 and scored another close decision (4-3) in his first bout in the consolation bracket.

Two-time regional runner-up Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) saw his chances at a third consecutive national appearances halted. The junior heavyweight couldn't overcome a late-season injury and was upended 6-1 in his first bout before withdrawing.

The action resumes Saturday at 9 a.m.
