Bullets Fall to Cardinals in Four

Shannon Fletcher ’20 posts career-high 17 kills

Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa.  – Senior Shannon Fletcher (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) posted a career-high 17 kills, but it wasn't enough to rally the Bullets as Catholic University walked out of Bream Gym with a 3-1 non-conference victory Wednesday night.

Match Summary
First Set: The opening set featured 14 ties and six lead changes with the advantage never getting past three for either team. Morrill set the tone with six of her team's 17 kills in the frame, but Gettysburg countered with six kills from Stranick. Stranick reached set point for the Bullets with a kill to make it 24-23, but Morrill came right back with a knockdown of her own to tie the score. After a series of back-and-forth points, the Cardinals clinched the win on an ace by Kelly.
Second Set: The Cardinals carried the momentum into set two with each of the first five points. Gettysburg clawed its way back into the contest and pulled to 23-22 on a kill by Fletcher. Service errors on the Bullets accounted for Catholic's final two points.  
Third Set: Gettysburg picked up its offense in the third set, recording the best hitting percentage by either team in the match at .324. Fletcher and Adams went a combined 7-0-11 and Sequeira put up six digs to pace the defensive effort. Stranick polished off the win with back-to-back kills.
Fourth Set: The fourth set was all black and red as the hosts committed eight hitting errors and five reception errors. Kelly put up seven digs and Isabelle Cooper and Kaitlyn McDonough sealed the victory with a block.
 
Where the Series Stands Now
The win was the first by the Cardinals over the Bullets in 17 years. Gettysburg had won five in a row against Catholic and still leads the series 17-4-1.
 
What's Next
Gettysburg heads south of the Mason-Dixon Line to visit Washington and Lee for a two-day tournament on Sept. 6-7. The Bullets battle the Generals Friday at 7 p.m. before taking on Southern Virginia University and Meredith College at 12:30 and 3 p.m., respectively, Saturday afternoon.
