GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College athletic teams kept the annual tradition of participating in the Adams/Mason Dixon Heart Walk running strong last Friday.
More than 40 student-athletes and staff members from the field hockey and women's lacrosse teams joined the walk either in-person or virtually. Those able to meet in-person traversed the traditional Heart Walk course looping from the Gettysburg Middle School down around Culp's Hill and Spangler's Spring last Friday afternoon. The remaining participants away from campus paved their own paths through their home neighborhoods.
"We are so pleased our teams were able to join together and do this event, both in-person and virtually," said field hockey coach
Barb Jordan. "We are thankful to Joe Lynch for organizing a Gettysburg College team, as he does each year, and we are happy to do our part to help raise awareness and funds for this worthy cause."
For the first time in the nearly three-decade long history of the event, the Heart Walk was converted into a digital experience to allow as many participants as possible. Instead of the annual one-day event, the entire month of September was dedicated to the walk and raising funds to support research and train front-line workers.
As usual, Gettysburg College was among the top fundraising organizations with over $3,500 raised so far, second only to UPMC Hanover. The athletic programs have participated in the event every year since the early 2000s with Director of Alumni Relations,
Joe Lynch '85, organizing the College squad.
"The Adams County Heart Walk has been a tradition for the lacrosse and field hockey teams for many years and while it was virtual this year, we weren't going to let it stop us," said lacrosse coach
Carol Cantele '83. "It is a great cause and Joe Lynch is an awesome team captain for Gettysburg College. Our college is a big contributor to this cause and we are happy to play a small part in its success."
