Gettysburg blanks Johns Hopkins to open conference slate

THE SKINNY STORY
Gettysburg recorded its first dual meet shutout in six years, opening the Centennial Conference schedule with a 46-0 win at Johns Hopkins.

THE LEADERS
Phil Nave (Venetia, Pa./Peters Twp.) led the Bullets with a 3-minute, 45-second pin at 197. It was one of six matches that Gettysburg won by at least a major decision of the eight that were contested.

FOR THE FOES
• Freddy Pimental led the Bullets, going to sudden victory at 149.

THE REST OF THE STORY
Tank Spelta (Elkridge, Md./Georgetown Prep) and Torey Falkinburg (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) each took forfeits to open the night and stake the Bullets to an early 12-0 lead. Brendan Callahan (Woolrich Twp., N.J./Kingsway Regional) added a technical fall in the first contested match of the night, opening up a 17-0 lead with his 16-0 victory.
Jake Mitchell (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) earned the win at 149 in the highlight match of the night. Trailing 7-2 entering the final period, he recorded a pair of third-period takedowns to force an extra period, where he notched another takedown for a 12-9 win in sudden victory. Gavin Pascoe (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) made it a 25-0 lead midway through with another technical fall win, 20-4. Ethan Composto (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) grabbed a 14-2 major decision win at 165 to seal the match.
Joseph Dietz (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) and Kobe Moore (Harrisburg, Pa./Camp Hill) made it three straight major decisions. Dietz won 13-4 at 174 and Moore – in his season debut – won 11-1 at 184 before the Phil Nave pin at 197.
Simon Taylor (Alexandria, Va./Woodbury Forest School) wrapped up the night with a 5-0 win at heavyweight, securing the shutout. For Gettysburg, it was the first blanking in a conference dual defeating Washington and Lee in 2004 and the first shutout against Johns Hopkins since Jan. 27, 1996 (52-0).
