LANCASTER, Pa. – Five members of the Gettysburg wrestling team have been named to the All-Centennial Conference (CC) team by virtue of their finishes at the championship on Feb. 14.
Brendan Callahan (Woolrich Twp., N.J./Kingsway Regional), who won the title at 141, and
Gavin Pascoe (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), who won the title at 157, were first-team honorees while
Torey Falkinburg (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan), runner-up at 133,
Jake Mitchell (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley), runner-up at 149, and
Justin Richey (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley), runner-up at 174, were second-team honorees.
The coaching staff, led by second-year head coach
Brad Brosius, was tabbed Coaching Staff of the Year.
Pascoe earned his third all-conference honor after second-team accolades each of the last two seasons. Richey was an all-conference performer for the second straight year after claim first-team honors last season.
Callahan, the top seed at 141, opened his quest to his first individual title with a 15-0 technical fall in the opening round before notching a 4-minute, 36-second fall in the semifinals. In the title tilt, Callahan recorded an 18-4 major decision over Ursinus' Andrew Schaen.
Pascoe started his day at 157 with a 16-1 second-period technical fall. In the semifinals, Pascoe got a 4-1 win in the first tiebreaking period before earning a 7-0 decision over the Bears' Braden Kmak in the championship bout.
Falkinburg notched two wins by decision in his first two matches at 133. He downed McDaniel's Neil Sharma 13-6 before downing Ursinus' Blaise Verdino 4-2 in the semifinals. In the championship bout, Wesley Wydick (Merchant Marine) earned an 8-1 win over Falkinburg for the title.
Mitchell had a bye in the opening round at 149 before notching a 7-4 decision in the semifinals but fell to Wrestler of the Year Thomas Monn (McDaniel) by technical fall, 17-1.
Richey had a pair of match termination wins to advance to the final round. He recorded a 16-0 technical fall just four seconds into the third period in the opening match before downing Andrew Huesgen (Merchant Marine) in a 1-minute, 2-second pin. Ursinus' Anthony Cerulli got the better of Richey with a 15-0 technical fall in the title match.
Brosius and his staff were the first Gettysburg coaching staff to earn the wrestling honor. The Bullets finished second as a team, recording 87.5 points for their highest finish at the championship since 2000.
Simon Taylor (Alexandria, Va./Woodbury Forest School) was Gettysburg's selection to the All-Sportsmanship Team.
The Bullets return to action at the NCAA Mideast Regional at College of New Jersey on Feb. 27-28.
