GRANTHAM, Pa. – Junior
Bobby Christopher (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) finished third at heavyweight while freshman
Marshall Puls (New York, N.Y./Hotchkiss) was sixth at 197, highlighting Gettysburg's performance at the Messiah College Petrofes Invitational Friday and Saturday.
The Bullets finished with 28.5 points to place 10th among 13 teams. Wilkes University won the team title with 146 points.
Christopher drew the No. 2 seed and won his first two bouts on Friday. He started with a 2-1 decision of Wilkes' Colin Nagy before earning a 10-5 victory over No. 7 Richard Wigglesworth of Springfield. Then in Saturday's semifinals, he took on No. 3 Derick Hesson of Mt. Union and lost 6-2 by decision, but rallied to beat No. 8 Zane Bachert of Messiah 12-9 before pinning No. 4 James Lomonica of Oneonta in 27 seconds in the third-place match. Christopher is now 11-4 this season.
On Friday, Puls lost his opening bout against top-seeded Zach Pizarro of Wilkes, suffering an 11-3 major decision, but rallied with three straight wins in the wrestleback. He knocked off Wala Canario of Oneonta by a 6-5 margin, then dropped Nick Erdenberger of Johns Hopkins 9-3. He closed out the night with a 2:01 pin of Johns Hopkins' Reid Mosquera.
On Saturday, Puls defeated Corey Hagan of Mt. Union by a 5-3 count before he was pinned in 6:07 by No. 3 Connor McNamara of Ursinus. In the fifth-place match, Stevens' Ernie Guiamano claimed a 9-5 decision.
At 174 pounds, junior
DJ Neri (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson), the No. 5 seed, won his first two matches, beating Tyler Pickard of Wilkes 3-1 before eeking out a 1-0 victory over Ursinus' Mike Williams. However, he lost 12-3 by major decision to No. 4 Bobby Bishop of Stevens in the quarterfinals and was pinned in 1:58 by Mike Kevlin of Ursinus in the wrestleback.
Gettysburg competes in its final meet of the season on Wednesday, when it competes with Elizabethtown College in a tri-match at Johns Hopkins University at 5 p.m.
