GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Eric Hynes (Far Hills, N.J./The Pingry School) scored a pair of first-half goals for the Gettysburg College men's soccer team in its match with visiting Misericordia University Wednesday night, but the Cougars staged a comeback in the second half to knot the score and keep the Bullets from their third-straight victory to start the season with a 2-2 double overtime tie.

Gettysburg (2-0-1) controlled the tempo early against Misericordia (0-2-1) with several offensive strikes and hit paydirt at 17:01 when Hynes converted a header pass from senior Geoff Menge (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) for his first goal of the match. Junior Rich Kampert (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) also picked up an assist on the play after lining a free kick directly to Menge in the box.

Hynes struck again just over seven minutes later, fielding a chip pass out of the midfield from fellow sophomore Kyle DeBlois (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) and beating a pair of defenders into the box, where he placed the ball past the on-coming keeper for his team-best third goal of the 2009 season.

The Cougars' fortunes started to turn 12 minutes into the second stanza when Menge took a penalty kick for the Bullets and missed wide left. Just two minutes later, his number on Misericordia's side, Joey Scanlon, took a penalty kick and blasted it top-shelf just left of middle, cutting the deficit to 2-1 at 59:31.

The visitors knotted the score in the 66th minute when Joshua Yoo raced down the right side of the box and nailed a cross in front of the goal. Tim Bullis was waiting just inside the left post to head to ball into the net and tie the match.

Gettysburg picked up a red card with less than 15 minutes ago, forcing the Bullets to play a man down. The offense was still able to threaten the Cougar goal, including a shot by Hynes that was turned away by Andrew Loyd at 84:26.

Following a scoreless first overtime period which saw both keepers make one save, each team narrowly missed ending the contest in the second extra session. Misericordia had a shot nail the cross bar in the 106th minute, while Loyd snared a high blast by Menge in the 108th minute.

Gettysburg held the upper-hand in shots (26-16) and corner kicks (8-6), Loyd made seven stops for Misericordia, six coming in the second half and overtime periods, while freshman Mike Walmer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) made four saves for the Bullets.

Gettysburg embarks on its first road trip of the season this Saturday, Sept. 12, at Immaculata University. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
