ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Elizabethtown College brought around runs in its final at bats in both ends of a doubleheader against Gettysburg College on Wednesday, depriving the Bullets of a victory. The Blue Jays scored the game-winning run in the seventh to pull out a 3-2 decision in the opener and managed another run in the final frame of the nightcap which led to a 6-6 tie.
Gettysburg (5-4-1) suffered some tough luck in its first action on northern soil. Trailing 2-0 in the first game, the Bullets brought around a pair of runs in the sixth on a one-out double by sophomore
Catrina DelGais (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern) to tie the game.
The game appeared headed to extra innings as the first two Elizabethtown (5-2-1) batters went down quietly in the bottom of the seventh, but Heather Peluso doubled to put the go-ahead run in scoring position. Following a hit batter, Lindsey Cooper ended the game with a run-scoring single.
Seniors
Sarah Woodbury (Audubon, Pa./Mount de Sales Academy) and
Kara Kempski (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) each went 2-for-3 for Gettysburg. Senior
Beth McCullough (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) fell to 2-3 on the year with the loss despite stranding base runners every inning and striking out five.
The Blue Jays jumped out in front with runs in each of the first two innings in game two. Gettysburg answered back emphatically with a six-run sixth, highlighted by a two-run pinch-hit single by McCullough.
Elizabethtown pulled to within a run in the bottom half of the frame on a run-scoring double by Peluso and a two-run homer by Elly McCarthy. After the Bullets went down quietly in the seventh, Peluso struck again with two outs in the bottom of the inning, plating the game-tying run with a double to the fence. McCarthy grounded out in the next at bat and the game was called on account of darkness.
Gettysburg managed 11 hits in the nightcap with junior
Megan Lott (Bellsville, Md./Pallotti) posting three in four at bats, adding one RBI and one run. Sophomore
Adrienne Rahs (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) went 2-for-4 with a run, while junior
