Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg struck first in its meeting with Muhlenberg under the lights at Clark Field Saturday night, but the Mules connected last in beating the Bullets 2-1 in Centennial Conference men's soccer action.

Senior Eric Hynes put Gettysburg (6-7-1, 3-3-1 CC) on the board first with his team-best sixth goal of the campaign in the 12th minute. Sophomore and fellow Pingry School grad Andrew LaFontaine set the play, beating his defender with a nice move to his left and sending a perfect cross into the middle of the box for Hynes' header.

Muhlenberg (9-4-1, 5-2 CC) turned in a near copy of Gettysburg's goal just three minutes later as Ryan Barlotta crossed a ball from the left side to Danny Way in front of the goal in the 15th minute.

The Mules kept the momentum going with Nate Squire blasting a free kick from about 30 yards out into the top of the net for a 2-1 lead at 19:20.

Despite the quick start, both teams locked down defensively for the remainder of the match. Muhlenberg keeper Jas Chojnowski and Gettysburg goalie Connor Darrell each made one save to close out the opening period.

The Bullets out-shot the Mules 7-2 and forced five corner kicks in the second stanza, but only one attempt was on goal. Sophomore Tyler Shaffer connected from the top of the box with a defender knocking the ball down for an easy save by Chojnowski.

With 2:39 left, Gettysburg appeared to send in the game-tying goal as junior Andrew McLane broke away and scored along the left side of the cage. However, McLane was called offside on the play and the goal was wiped away.

Gettysburg finished with a 15-8 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Bullets host Franklin & Marshall College for their next contest on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m.
