Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Eric Hynes turned in his first career hat trick to lead the Gettysburg College men's soccer team to a 4-1 win over visiting Washington College in a Centennial Conference match up Saturday at Clark Field.

Gettysburg (4-3, 2-0 CC) picked up its third consecutive victory after out-shooting Washington (2-4-1, 0-2 CC) 25-5 in the match. For the second-straight match, Hynes put the Bullets out in front early by scoring off a deflected ball in the sixth minute. That would be the only tally of the opening period despite several open opportunities for the hosts, including two more shots by Hynes that were stopped by Shoremen keeper Chris Phipps.

The hosts struck early in the final stanza as junior Andrew McLane received a pass from the top of the box, moved right around a defender, and beat Phipps with a low shot at 51:44.

Washington cut the deficit in half in the 60th minute after picking up a free kick just outside the box. Ryan Duffy's shot deflected off the end of the Bullets' wall into the top-right corner of the goal.

Hynes provided the answer for Gettysburg, scoring twice in the next four minutes. His second goal of the match came courtesy of a chip pass from sophomore Tyler Shaffer in the 62nd minute. Just 2:29 later, senior Kyle DeBlois threaded a pass through the defense ahead to Hynes, who out-raced three defenders and beat Phipps with a low shot.

Hynes finished with eight shot attempts, while Shaffer and sophomore Brian Sugarman each posted four shots. Hynes' hat trick was the first by a Bullet since Geoff Menge '10 struck three times against Haverford College on Oct. 10, 2009.

Sophomore Connor Darrell made a pair of saves in the first half to pick up the victory for Gettysburg.

Phipps finished with a match-high six saves for Washington.

Gettysburg faces Johns Hopkins University (3-2-2, 1-0 CC) at Clark Field on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at 4 p.m.
