Top Moment No. 8: Cantele Reaches 300

Lacrosse mentor eclipses career milestone

The women's lacrosse team celebrates after Carol Cantele's 300th career win.
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Carol Cantele '83 added another notch to her belt with her 300th career victory as a women's lacrosse coach this spring, and it marks top moment No. 8 for Gettysburg College athletics in 2011-12.

During the course of her 20 years at the helm, Cantele has led Gettysburg to a national championship, seven Centennial Conference titles, and 12 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. She has always put her student-athletes before her own needs, but in a match-up with McDaniel College on April 4, the Bullets gift-wrapped Cantele's next milestone.

Gettysburg left little doubt as to the win, scoring 16 of the first 17 goals and leading at the half 11-0. Every player who dressed saw time on the field, with 11 tossing in goals.

The night ended with the players donning shirts with “Cantele 300” emblazoned on the back. It was a rare milestone, one that only six women's lacrosse coaches had enjoyed prior to Cantele.

Moreover, Cantele joined a number of current Gettysburg colleagues to reach the mark. Baseball's John Campo (457 wins), swimming's Mike Rawleigh (437), men's lacrosse's Hank Janczyk (368), women's basketball's Mike Kirkpatrick (326), and men's basketball's George Petrie (323) have all eclipsed 300 wins. Combined, Cantele and Janczyk represent more lacrosse wins by any other duo in NCAA history.

Gettysburg closed the year with a 19-2 overall record. The team brought the conference title back to Gettysburg for the first time since 2006 and it made its 11th consecutive appearance in the national tournament.
