GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College men's soccer team lost its Centennial Conference opening match as Ursinus College scored twice in the final period to pull out a 2-1 win at Clark Field on Saturday.
Gettysburg (2-3, 0-1 CC) appeared to have things well in hand in the opening half, holding the visitors to just one shot in the period. The hosts struck early as sophomore
Christian Pyros broke away from the defense down the right side and fed a cross into the box. Junior
Tyler Shaffer polished off the pass for his second goal of the season at 10:08.
After scoring on its initial shot, Gettysburg would be denied any additional goals thanks in large part to Ursinus keeper Kieran Keyser. Just before the end of the first half, sophomore
Will Gately placed a header at the cage but Keyser laid out to slap the ball away with his hand and keep the deficit at one.
With Keyser locking down the Bullets, Ursinus made the most of its few scoring opportunities. The Bears picked up the tying score in the 56th minute as Charles Brodsky made his way into the box and crossed the ball to Ryan Butler for the goal. It was Butler's league-best eighth goal of the campaign.
Less than five minutes later, Ursinus capitalized on a free kick. Colin Kunkle took the kick from midfield and the ball carried all the way into the back of the net, clearing Gettysburg goalie
Jamie Hahn as he came out to defend the play.
Gettysburg fired seven shots in the final 20 minutes, but couldn't connect as Keyser made five of his match-high nine saves.
The Bullets held a 19-5 advantage in shots and an 8-2 lead in corner kicks.
Shaffer recorded five shots, while Hahn finished with one save in the loss.
Gettysburg will host the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m.
