Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg limited Dickinson to eight shots, including just four on goal, but the 20th-ranked Red Devils came away with a 2-0 Centennial Conference (CC) men's soccer victory over the Bullets Saturday evening at Clark Field.
Dickinson (11-2-1, 6-0 CC) scored a goal in each half en route to its sixth-straight win.
Freshman goalie
Max Karen (Huntington, N.Y./Elwood-John Glenn) made two saves for Gettysburg (8-5-1, 1-4-1 CC) while Reed Milbrath also stopped two shots for the Red Devils.
It was the 400th game coached by
Mark Mettrick, who is in his first year as head coach of the Bullets. He also went 166-84-25 at Loyola University and 57-42-12 at Mount St. Mary's University before coming to Gettysburg.
The Bullets had a golden opportunity early on, receiving a free kick just outside the box less than two minutes into the match. Senior
Kyle Franks (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) rifled a shot that nearly slipped under the crossbar, but Milbrath leaped to punch the ball out of the air.
Karen turned in an outstanding save of his own in the 18th minute, stoning Alfred Hylton-Dei on a breakaway. But the Red Devils broke through three minutes later, when Nate Latshaw converted a give-and-go in the center of the box off a pass from Hylton-Dei, whose brother,
Sakyi Hylton-Dei, was on the opposing sideline for Gettysburg.
Dickinson outshot the Bullets 5-2 in the opening half, with Karen making another stop in the 40th minute.
The Bullets had a pair of good looks in the second half, starting with a well-struck ball by sophomore
Henry Smith (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) in the 52nd minute that was swatted away by Milbrath. Gettysburg received another free kick from just outside the 18 in the 66th minute, but senior
Christian Pyros (Shavertown, Pa./Dallas) had his shot blocked before Smith's rebound sailed wide left.
The Devils struck again in the 72nd minute, when Jonathan Harper's cross from the left side was deflected by a defender. Ryan Brown was there to collect the loose ball and punch it into a wide-open net and set the final score.
Gettysburg takes a week off before playing its home finale next Saturday, when it hosts Washington College starting at 4 p.m.
