Box Score 2 ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Gettysburg College put an emphatic stamp on the conclusion of a non-conference doubleheader sweep at Elizabethtown College Thursday evening as the Bullets posted a 21-5 victory over the Blue Jays in the nightcap.
Gettysburg (19-13) scored a pair of runs in its final at bat to help secure a 6-4 decision in the opening game. In game two, the Bullets sent 19 batters to the plate and scored 13 runs in the sixth inning to put an exclamation point on the sweep.
Every starting position player notched a hit and an RBI in the sweep. Junior
Emily Hall (Reston, Va./Flint Hill School) went 6-for-8 with two doubles and five RBI, while classmate
Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mt. St. Dominic) also went 6-for-8 with five runs, two RBI, two walks, and three stolen bases. Sophomore
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./Hunterdon Central) and freshman
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) each tallied four hits and scored four runs.
Tighe led off game one with a triple and came around to score on a single by Abell. Elizabethtown (12-19) answered in the home half and jumped ahead 2-1 with another run in the fourth inning.
Gettysburg took the lead for good with three unearned runs in the fifth inning. Tighe, Abell, and Zengel came around to score, the latter on single by sophomore
Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack). The Blue Jays cut the deficit to 4-3 with a run in the fourth, but the Bullets turned in a pair of runs in the final frame. Tighe picked up her third hit of the game to lead off the inning and came around to score on a double by Zengel. Hall plated the final run with her second hit of the game.
Sophomore
Michelle Fox (Newton, N.J./Blair Academy) improved to 9-7 with the win. Fox allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out five.
Runs were not a commodity in the nightcap as Gettysburg put up its highest offensive output since a 30-0 win over Lesley College in 2003. The visitors entered the sixth inning holding an 8-4 lead with Hall driving in three of those runs on three base hits.
In the sixth, each of the first four batters reached base and came around to score. After the first out in the inning, each of the next eight Bullets came in to score. Tighe, Abell, Zengel, and senior
Brooke Kalman (Edgemont, Pa./Penncrest) each posted two hits in the inning.
Junior
Lindsey Treanor (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) improved to 10-6 with the victory. Treanor allowed four runs (three earned) and fanned two in 4 1/3 innings.
Tighe finished 3-for-4 with two runs, two stolen bases, and two RBI. Zengel finished 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI, while senior
Maggie Maguire (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) went 2-for-4 with four runs and two RBI. Hall finished 4-for-5 with four RBI.
Gettysburg closes out the Centennial Conference schedule at home against Haverford College on Saturday, April 26, at 1 p.m.
