Box Score

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore KJ DePontes (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) scored two goals while sophomore Henry Smith (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) tallied one goal and one assist as the Gettysburg College men's soccer team captured its season opener with a 3-1 non-conference victory at Wilkes University Friday evening.

The win gave Bullet first-year head coach Mark Mettrick a victory in his Gettysburg debut.

Smith struck for the first goal of the season for the Orange and Blue, finding paydirt on a breakaway in the 21st minute. Then in the 29th minute, he set up DePontes' first goal – a shot from the right through the left post – as the Bullets took a 2-0 lead, which held up as the halftime score.

DePontes, making his first career appearance and start for Gettysburg, pushed his team's lead to 3-0 in the 57th minute when he scored off touches from junior Ryan Kennedy (Frederick, Md./McDonogh School) and senior Kyle Franks (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) on a free kick.

Wilkes broke up sophomore Peter Como's (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) shutout in the 79th minute on a scramble in front of the net. But the Bullets did not allow another shot the rest of the way.

Como, making his first career start, finished with one save while Patrick Loube stopped six shots for the Colonels.

Gettysburg outshot Wilkes 15-5.

The Bullets play their home opener next Friday, when they host Neumann University in a non-conference match beginning at 7 p.m.
