Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Kyle Franks (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) scored in the 57th minute and it held up as the game-tying goal as the Gettysburg College men's soccer team tied 21st-ranked Muhlenberg College 1-1 in a Centennial Conference (CC) match-up Saturday afternoon at Clark Field.
The Bullets (7-1-1, 1-0-1 CC) outshot the Mules 13-8 and had a potential game-winning header by sophomore
Jordy Steelman (Newburypost, Mass./Newburypost) saved in the 110th minute.
Muhlenberg (6-0-2, 1-0-1 CC), which remained undefeated, received four saves from Danny Pinto.
Gettysburg has now posted the team's best record through nine matches since the 2002 squad opened 7-0-2.
The Bullets outshot the Mules 6-2 in the opening half and fired off the game's first two shots before Travis Wantchekon put the Mules on top with a goal in the ninth minute, bouncing a shot from the left inside the right post.
Pinto made two saves for Muhlenberg in the opening half and the Mules carried a 1-0 lead into the intermission. The match was delayed approximately 20 minutes at the end of the period when Gettysburg goalie
Peter Como (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) sustained an injury.
Franks pulled the Bullets even in the 57th minute with the first goal of his career. Sophomore
Henry Smith (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) started the sequence, back-tapping a pass to classmate
KJ DePontes (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) in the left side of the box. DePontes lofted a beautiful cross to Franks, who, with his momentum carrying him away from the goal, fired a shot a shot out of the air, across his body and over the goalie, making it a 1-1 contest.
Freshman
Max Karen (Huntington, N.Y./Elwood-John Glenn), who replaced Como in goal, made two saves in the second half, when the Mules held a 5-4 edge in shots.
Each goalie made one save in the first overtime. Pinto turned aside a point-blank shot from Smith in the 91st minute before Karen registered a save in the 99th minute.
Muhlenberg was awarded back-to-back corner kicks in the 106th minute, but neither team was able to muster a shot until the final minute. The Bullets threatened in transition, when senior
Parker Delmolino's (Monroe, Conn./Fairfield Prep) cross found Steelman on the right side of the box with less than 40 seconds left. But the Mules regained and possession, and after a free kick and stoppage of time, Bryan Attanasio's shot hit the side of the net as time expired.
Karen, making just his second collegiate appearance, finished with three saves.
Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, when it visits Johns Hopkins University in another Centennial Conference match-up starting at 7 p.m.
