Team ScoresSHENANDOAH, Texas – The Gettysburg College men's swimming team's 200-freestyle relay turned in one of the most incredible performances in school history, leading a national championship race for nearly the entire way before capturing runner-up honors on Day Two of the NCAA Division III Championship Thursday evening at the Conroe ISD Natatorium.
Â
Senior
Jason Potter (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), senior
Mike Harmon (Shippensburg, Pa./home-schooled), freshman
Tyler Dougherty (West Chester, Pa./Salesianum School [Del.]), and senior
Ashton Leyens (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) paced a talented field that also featured such prominent programs as Kenyon College and Denison University.
Â
Potter led off with a split of 20.13 seconds and was followed by Harmon, who cut through the water in a sizzling 19.90 seconds. Dougherty swam third and was timed at 20.15 seconds, and Leyens carried the lead all the way to the wall while clocking a 20.23-second split. But Kenyon's Wes Manz countered with a 19.92 split as the Lords rallied from third to first in the final leg to finish a mere three-hundredths of a second in front of the Bullets.
Â
With their incredible time, the foursome slashed 0.66 from the previous school and Centennial Conference record with a time of 1:20.41 while capturing First Team All-America honors. It was Gettysburg's second runner-up finish in as many nights, as Potter captured the silver in the 50-freestyle on Wednesday. In addition, it was the highest finish for any relay team in program history.
Â
With 79 team points, Gettysburg now finds itself tied with the College of New Jersey for eighth place in the team standings heading into the final two days of competition.
Â
Also in Thursday night's finals session, Gettysburg's 400-medley relay team of Harmon, Dougherty, junior
Tyler Gould (Darien, Conn./Darien), and Potter touched in 3:20.49. With his leadoff backstroke leg, Harmon reset his own school record with a time 50.00 seconds. In Thursday morning's preliminary session, the same group broke their own school and Centennial Conference record with a mark of 3:20.36. They become just the second medley relay team in program history to earn All-America honors, as the same four captured First Team honors on Wednesday night with an eighth-place finish in the 200-medley.
Â
Potter extended his program record for All-America awards to 16 while Harmon and Leyens both increased their total to nine.
Â
Also in Thursday morning's prelims, Leyens placed 20th in the 200-freestyle, clocking a personal season-best time of 1:39.53.
Â
Gettysburg will have just one swimmer in action on Friday, when Harmon competes in the 100-backstroke. Prelims will be held at 11 a.m. EST before finals commence at 7 p.m.
