Box Score 2 GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg wrapped up its regular season with a non-conference sweep of Elizabethtown College at Bobby Jones Field on Tuesday.
Gettysburg (28-12) reached the second-highest win total in program history by posting a pair of 6-3 decisions against Elizabethtown (13-23). The Bullets didn't waste any time in the opener with three runs in the first inning. Sophomore
Jamie Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) started the day with a single to right-center and came around to score on a single to center by junior
Meghan Hisgen (East Northport, N.Y./Commack). Senior
Ashley Iannone (Great Meadows, N.J./Blair Academy) drew a bases-loaded walk to plate the next run before freshman
Stephanie Leonardo (East Haddam, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) singled in the final tally.
Elizabethtown used the longball to draw to a tie. A two-run shot by Kelsey Brown in the second and a solo homer by Jess White in the third tied the game 3-3.
Gettysburg pulled back in front in the fifth inning. Abell drew a lead-off walk and advanced to third on the next two putouts. Hisgen's hit to shortstop was mishandled, allowing Abell to score.
Senior
Lindsey Treanor (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) worked into the fifth before giving way to freshman
Aileen Reilly (Huntington Station, N.Y./St. Anthony's). With runners on first and second, Reilly's first pitch was popped up to a vacant spot past first base along the right-field line. Hisgen flew into the space for a highlight-reel catch to close the inning.
Gettysburg tacked on two more runs in the sixth. Leonardo singled to lead off the frame and scored on a single by senior
Melissa Tighe (Little Falls, N.J./Mount St. Dominic Academy). The Bullet speedster created the next run, advancing to second on the throw to home, stealing third base, and then racing home on an errant throw to third by the catcher.
Reilly retired the side in the seventh to pick up her second save of the season. Treanor improved to 12-8 on the year and earned her 34th career victory, moving her into a tie for fifth in program history.
Leonardo paced the Bullets with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
The Bullets took the early advantage in the nightcap as well. Hisgen led off the second inning with a double to the right-center gap and scored on a single up the middle by Leonardo. Iannone, who posted a bunt single in the frame, scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0.
The Blue Jays cut the margin in half by scoring on a passed ball in the top of the third inning. Reilly did not allow any runners to reach second base over the next three innings, allowing the hosts to build their advantage. Gettysburg added four runs in the fourth, including two on a double to right-center by junior
Steph Zengel (High Bridge, N.J./North Hunterdon) to make it 6-1.
White stroked a two-out, two-run single to cut the deficit to 6-3 before Hisgen scooped up the grounder for an unassisted force-out at second to close the game.
Reilly allowed three runs (two earned) on 10 hits with three strikeouts. She improved to 15-2 and moved into a tie for third for wins in a season at Gettysburg.
Tighe, Abell, and Zengel all continued their assaults on the record books. Tighe and Zengel each went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Abell went 1-for-3 with a run. Tighe and Abell are now just one run shy of Gettysburg's single-season mark of 47 held by
Jackie Pareso '05. Tighe is also just two hits shy of the career record of 189 held by
Joy Hallfors '13. The Bullet senior also set the standard for games played and games started in the nightcap by appearing in her 152nd outing.
Zengel sits one hit and one double shy of the single-season records held by Pareso (61) and
Adrienne Rahs '12 (15), respectively. She also scored her 100th run in game two, becoming just the fourth Bullet to score 100 runs and drive in 100 runs in a career.
As a team, Gettysburg eclipsed the program season record for runs scored with 262, adding to a record list that includes at bats (1,127), hits (387), doubles (68), total bases (500), and stolen bases (99).
The Bullets head to the Centennial Conference Championship where they will face Haverford College on Friday, May 1, at 2 p.m.
