Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Patrick Santini (Old Greenwich, Conn./Old Greenwich) scored two first-half goals and the Gettysburg College men's soccer team earned a 4-1 victory over Wilkes University in its season and home opener Tuesday evening in a non-conference outing.
The contest marked the first varsity matched played on the newly-surfaced Clark Field.
Junior
Henry Smith (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) assisted on both of Santini's goals before sophomores
Dylan McCluskey (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and
Michael Farese (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) added insurance tallies less than two minutes apart in the second half to give the Bullets a commanding 4-0 lead. The Colonels broke up the shutout with a goal in the 82nd minute.
Junior
Peter Como (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) made four saves in goal for the Bullets, who outshot Wilkes 16-7.
Santini wasted little time getting the scoreboard, striking just five minutes in. Taking a cross from Smith, he made a quick turn and fired a long shot from the top of the box that glanced off the left post and into the back of the goal. Then in the 28th minute, Santini - with his back facing the goal on the right post - flicked in an impressive header off a spectacular pass from Smith just inside midfield following a restart.
The Bullets continued to pull away in the second half, when in the 69th minute McCluskey converted a dish from junior
Jordy Steelman (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport), chipping in a shot just inside the left post for his first career goal off following another restart. Farese completed the Bullets' scoring with a penalty kick in the 70th minute.
Gettysburg continues its season on Friday, when it visits York (Pa.) College at 4 p.m. in another non-league affair.
