KJ DePontes (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) and sophomore
Patrick Santini (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) posted one goal and one assist apiece, leading the Gettysburg College men's soccer team to a 5-1 non-conference victory over Goucher College Saturday afternoon at an overcast Clark Field.
The Bullets (4-0) won their fourth-consecutive match to open the season and are off to their best start through four matches since the 2001 squad also started 4-0.
Gettysburg, which was aided by two own goals, carried a shutout into the 80th minute, when the Gophers scored on a penalty kick.
Junior
Peter Como (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) made a season-high five saves in goal for the Bullets while Daniel Hendry stopped seven shots for Goucher (1-2-1).
The Bullets got on the scoreboard in the 11th minute with the first own goal, as a Goucher defender deflected a Gettysburg cross over the goalie's head and into the net.
Gettysburg made it a 2-0 game in the 19th minute, when Santini delivered a pass to DePontes from the midfield. DePontes turned and fired a shot into the net for his second goal of the season.
DePontes and Santini switched roles in the 35th minute. From the left corner, DePontes lofted a perfect pass to Santini, who headed in a shot over the goalie for his team-leading third goal of the year.
The Bullets saw their lead swell to 4-0 in the 51st minute. Smith took a cross from Santini and ripped a shot from the center of the box that Hendry deflected. Smith rebounded home the loose ball just inside the left post for his second tally of the season.
Tate Becker put Goucher on the scoreboard with a PK before the second own goal of the match set the final score in the 86th minute.
The Bullets finished with a 15-10 shot advantage.
Gettysburg returns to play on Wednesday, when it makes the short trek up Route 15 to take on third-ranked Messiah College at 7 p.m. in a non-conference showdown.
