Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Patrick Santini (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) scored the game-winning goal midway through the first overtime after senior defender
Marc Franco (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold Township) tied the match with 19 seconds left in regulation, and the Gettysburg College men's soccer team rallied for a thrilling 2-1 victory over Ursinus College in its Centennial Conference opener Saturday afternoon at Clark Field.
Junior
Henry Smith (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and sophomore
Matt Stine (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) assisted on both goals for Gettysburg (5-0-1), which has equaled the program's best start through six matches since the 1993 squad also started 5-0-1.
The Bullets outshot the Bears 14-6 and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Gettysburg outshot Ursinus 7-1 in the first half but could not slip a shot past goalie Vince Maiorino.
Gettysburg keeper
Peter Como (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) made an impressive save early in the second half, deflecting away a well-struck ball from point-blank range. But Ursinus (1-4-1, 0-1 CC) took a 1-0 lead when Noah Kimelheim's long-range free kick arched high into the net in the 69th minute.
The Bullets were awarded a corner kick with less than a minute left, and Stine served ball into the box from the left. Smith headed the ball to Franco, who from the left side of the box drilled in his first goal of the season and the second of his career to pull the Bullets even.
In the 95th minute Stine sparked the offense again, sending a long pass to Smith on the right post. Smith's header pass was tipped by the goalie, and Santini got behind the keeper to punch in the game-winner before being mobbed by his teammates.
Como finished with four saves for the Bullets while Maiorino also stopped four shots for the Bears.
Gettysburg continues its season on Wednesday, when it hosts Marymount University in a non-conference tilt.
