Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Henry Smith (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scored a pair of second-half goals and the Gettysburg College men's soccer team rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit, topping Marymount University 2-1 in a non-conference affair Wednesday evening at Clark Field.
The Bullets (6-0-1) remained undefeated on the season and continued their best start since the 1993 team opened the year 10-0-1.
Gettysburg was the aggressor early on, taking the first 10 shots of the match, including a pair from sophomore
Patrick Santini (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) that hit the crossbar. But Marymount (4-4) took the lead in the 26th minute when a Bullet defender's pass back to the goalie found its way into the net.
The Saints would outshoot the Bullets 6-2 over the remainder of the half but manage just one shot on goal.
Just over five minutes into the second half, Smith was tackled in the box before smashing in a penalty kick to make it a 1-1 match.
The visitors nearly reclaimed their lead in the 56th minute, when Brandon Orozco's header off a corner kick struck the left post. But junior goalie
Peter Como (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) would make all three of his saves for the match over a 20-minute stretch in the second half to keep the score even.
The Bullets went ahead in the 82nd minute, when junior
KJ DePontes (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) served a long pass from near midfield to a breaking Smith, who got behind the defense. Marymount keeper Logan Cropper rushed out to meet him, but Smith tapped the ball past him and inside the right post for what held up as the game-winner.
Gettysburg finished with a 25-13 advantage in shots. Cropper stopped three shots for the Saints.
The Bullets return to Centennial Conference action on Saturday, when they visit Muhlenberg College at 7 p.m.
