Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Henry Smith (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) scored a pair of goals as the Gettysburg College men's soccer team battled Dickinson College to a 2-2 tie in Centennial Conference (CC) action Saturday evening at Clark Field.
The Bullets (7-3-1, 3-2-1 CC) led 2-1 before Dickinson (5-7-2, 2-3-1 CC) forced overtime with 1:10 left in regulation.
Gettysburg, which remained undefeated (4-0-2) at home this season, outshot the Red Devils 22-16 and held a 7-6 edge in corner kicks. Freshman
Thomas Keane (Potomac, Md./Gonzaga College) made five saves for the Bullets while Jeremy Palcan stopped seven shots for Dickinson.
It was the third career multi-goal game for Smith, who also scored two goals once last season and once in 2014.
The Bullets had the upper hand early in the match, outshooting the Devils 9-3 in the opening stanza. Palcan made a pair of big saves, including a two-handed stop on a blast from freshman
Bobby Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) in the 18th minute and a diving stop on a one-timer from junior
Patrick Santini (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) five minutes later. Smith also grazed the post with a header in the 28th minute.
Dickinson nearly scored on the first shot of the second half, but Brendan McGovern's breakaway attempt drifted just left. Then in the 58th minute, the Bullets received a penalty kick when Santini was tackled in the box. Smith stepped up and delivered, drilling in his third PK of the season.
The Red Devils pulled even just 40 seconds later with a PK of their own, with Matthew Edmonds converting after a Gettysburg handball in the box to make it a 1-1 game.
Keane kept the score tied with a pair of stops eight minutes apart, posting a nifty kick save in the 59th minute and a leaping fingertip deflection on a Macsen Pritchard header in the 67th minute.
Gettysburg went back in front in the 69th minute. Smith was fouled just outside the box, and his free kick smashed off a defender and into the net for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Keane registered another outstanding save in the 76th minute, leaping high on a well-struck ball from Edmonds. But Dickinson found the answer when Dannny Sheppard headed in a cross from James Bundren on a breakaway.
Each side managed one shot on goal in the first overtime, but Keane and Palcan each made a save. Neither side was on target in the second bonus session, though early in the period Smith had a breakaway shot from deep in the right wing roll just wide of the far post.
Gettysburg closes out its five-game homestand with a pair of games next week, including a non-conference tilt with The College of New Jersey on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
