THE LEADERS
•
Ethan Composto (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) won the 149-pound weight class with a perfect 5-0 weekend. The freshman started his weekend with an 18-1 technical fall victory over Alvernia's Jared Magiafico before just missing a second tech fall with a 15-1 major decision over Shaun Quirk (Messiah) in the second quarter. Composto made it to Saturday in the championship bracket with a 12-5 win over Springfield's Ty Stewart. In the semifinals, Composto edged Messiah's Noah Rice 8-6 and tallied an 10-0 win over the Falcons' Dalton Monger in the title bout.
FOR THE FOES
• Messiah won its own tournament with 170.5 points, outdistancing second-place Springfield by 30 points.
THE REST OF THE STORY
•
Simon Taylor (Alexandria, Va./Woodberry Forest School) wrestled back to a fourth-place finish at heavyweight. His weekend opened with a bye before recording a 5-1 win over Averett's Sheldon Davis. A Peyton Wetzel (Thaddeus Stevens) pin in the opening 24 seconds of the second period relegated Taylor to the consolation bracket. Taylor recorded a 5-1 win over Nick Valenzano (King's) and a 6-2 win over Davis in the first tiebreaking period to advance to the consolation semis. An injury default after two periods sent Taylor the consolation final, where he dropped a 7-5 decision to Springfield's Benjamin Katz.
•
Brendan Callahan (Woolwich Twp., N.J./Kingsway Regional) finished fifth at 133. After receiving a bye in the opening round, Callahn notched a pair of major decisions, defeating Averett's Austin Long 11-3 and Messiah's Caiden Heller, 8-0. In the semifinals on Saturday, Gianni Manginelli (Springfield) took down Callahan with a 19-4 technical fall. Callahan then fell 5-0 to Bridgewater State's Malcolm Chrispin in the consolation semifinals but topped Mount Union's Nolan Frye by major decision 9-0 in the fifth-place match.
•
Connor Hoefling (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) also finished fifth at 174. He dropped his opening match 13-4 to Averett's Michael Gabbard but then wrestled his way through the consolation bracket to the fifth-place match. Hoefling notched a 1-minute, 46-second pin, a 20-4 technical fall, medical forfeit, and pin late in the second period to make it to the consolation semifinals. There, he dropped a 15-0 match to Gabbard before receiving a forfeit win in the fifth-place bout.
•
Heath Rudolph (Winchester, Va./Roanoke) rounded out the placewinners, finishing sixth at 157. He recorded three straight wins to start his day, notching a pair of decisions (8-4 and 7-3) around a 1-minute, 33-second fall of Springfield's Jeremiah Cruz before Rudolph's weekend ended with medical forfeits.
•
Torey Falkinburg (Brielle, N.J./Manasquan) went 3-2 at 141. He opened the tournament with a technical fall win over Jonathan Clarke (Bridgewater State), 18-1 before Asa Brunk (Messiah) sent Falkinburg to the consolation bracket with a third-period pin. Falkinburg then notched a 23-8 technical fall and 10-1 major decision before Garrett Gehr (Alvernia) pinned him in 2:13 a round shy of being a placewinner.
•
Kyle Collins (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd) went 2-2 at 133. After dropping a 9-3 decision to Averett's AJ Orlando, Collins started his consolation bracket with a pin midway through the third period and an 8-2 win over Mount Union's Hunter Newell before falling 10-9 to Shenandoah's Sean Rinebolt.
•
James Doliscar (Bayshore, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) also went 2-2 at 184, opening with a 17-0 technical fall win over George Vrachnos (Shenandoah) but then fell by first-period pin to finalist Ryder Slayton of Messiah. Doliscar added a 1-minute, 37-second fall of Thaddeus Stevens' Bobby Walters before falling to Muhlenberg's Fletcher Goodman, 11-1.
•
Phil Nave (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) had a bye to open his weekend at 197 before winning his first match with a pin in the final 17 seconds. Nave then dropped a sudden victory bout to Nick Rogers (Springfield) 5-2 in the quarterfinals and fell 5-2 to King's Rich Fronheiser in his only consolation bracket match.
•
Justin Musmanno notched one win at 141. After dropping a 17-2 match to open the tournament, he recorded a 16-1 technical fall of his own but then fell 12-7 to King's Nick Germano.
