He is regarded as one of the most naturally talented athletes to graduate from Gettysburg. Earl performed so well as a quarterback in football his sophomore year that he was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference college division sophomore of the year. Not only was he an exceptional passer, hitting 37 of 90 aerials for 590 yards that year, but he was also a field goal kicker, booting a three-pointer to beat Lafayette.
By the end of his senior year, he had completed 172 of 372 passes for 2,114 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was the conference passing leader, was ranked seventh nationally and was given honorable mention Little All-America.
Following a year's absence, he joined the basketball team as a senior and became the sixth player on one of Gettysburg's outstanding teams. As a baseball player he batted .282 and was a powerful clutch hitter.
