Playing alongside some of the greatest athletes in Gettysburg history, R. Dale Boyd made a name for himself not only as an outstanding athlete, but also through his class and sportsmanship.

On the gridiron, Boyd helped lead Gettysburg to the 1964 Middle Atlantic Conference University Division Championship. He was a favorite target of Gettysburg quarterbacks from 1963 to 1965, reeling in 96 passes for 1,583 yards – both school records. Boyd recorded five 100-yard receiving games, including two against Lehigh.

Saving his best season for last, Boyd shattered the single-season receiving records in 1965 with 43 receptions and 725 yards, earning MAC All-University Offensive Team and second-team All-Lutheran honors. He notched new school marks with 27 kickoff returns for 580 yards, and finished his career with over 3,000 all-purpose yards.

Boyd was also one of the top sprinters on the track team from 1964 to 1966, winning multiple events in the 100- and 220-yard dashes. The highlight of his running career came in 1964 when he helped the sprint medley relay win at the Penn Relays – the first Bullet relay team to win an event in 21 years.

A native of Pennsville, N.J., Boyd graduated from Gettysburg in 1966 with a degree in health and physical education.
