As a 5-9", 150-pound undergraduate, he played halfback in football and was an infielder-outfielder in baseball. He played in 21 of 23 varsity football games, scoring 101 points and rushing for 958 yards against such teams as Penn State and Army. An exceptional broken field runner, he recorded many long runs, including an 85-yard TD sprint against Muhlenberg. Twice he was named to the All-East team.

He started as an outfielder in baseball, but by his junior year moved to first base and finished his career at short stop. He had a hefty career batting average of .339. He also handled the ball 134 times and committed three errors, all his senior year. A homerun and single led to a win over Army in 1935.

A native of Bethlehem, Pa., he graduated with a degree in history.
