A native of Lykens, Pa., she was a member of the first undefeated field hockey team in 1951. As an experienced veteran on the 1953 team, she led Gettysburg to the all-college championship with wins over Wilson, Penn State and Shippensburg. She was also an alternate on the All-Mid-East team.

The basketball team of 1953-54 was one of the finest in the school's history. It won nine of 11 games. Mitchell was captain of the team and led Gettysburg to one of its toughest defenses in history.
