Competing alongside some of the greatest track and field athletes in school history, Pete Jurgs carved his own unparalleled legacy at Gettysburg.
Â
Jurgs arrived in Gettysburg as the track program was making its ascension in the Middle Atlantic Conference. The Bullets claimed the conference title in 1976 with the 6-5, 200-pound freshman thrower playing a major role. He won the javelin three times and placed third at the MAC Championships.
Â
The 1977 track campaign was one to remember for Gettysburg and Jurgs, who won the javelin in every meet prior to nationals. At the MAC Outdoor Championships, he helped lead the Bullets to another team championship by claiming the javelin title.
Â
Jurgs went on to compete at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships. He saved his best throw for last, smashing the school record with a toss of 213 feet, two inches and claiming All-America accolades with a fifth-place showing. As a team, Gettysburg finished 12th overall at the national meet – its highest finish ever.
Â
Injuries prevented Jurgs from continuing his track career at the same level, but his javelin record has stood the test of time for more than three decades.
Â
A native of Wharton, N.J., Jurgs graduated from Gettysburg with a degree in philosophy.
