He becomes the first golfer inducted into the Hall of Athletic Honor. He left little doubt about his future when he fired an 80 to take medalist honors in his first collegiate match against Lehigh and Bucknell. He went on to guide the Bullets to a third place in the Middle Atlantic Conference championships, finishing sixth among the individual players.

In 1981, he had three outstanding matches, shooting a 77 in a tri-match against Penn State, Bucknell and Lehigh; winning medalist honors in the Little Three match with a 74; and shooting a one-under-par 70 in the Dickinson Invitational. Gettysburg won the conference title that year and Jim placed second among the 110 golfers. He was invited to his first of three straight NCAA post-season tournaments. He finished the 54 holes with a 247, good for 17th place -- his highest finish in national competition.

In 1993, he set a Gettysburg Country Club course record with a 63. He improved his game so much in four years that he dropped from a freshman average of 82.6 to a 77.4 his senior year.
