A football quarterback from 1953-55, he became the first Gettysburg player to accumulate more than 2,000 yards total offense. During his career, he completed 121 of 227 passes for 1,857 yards and 27 touchdowns and he scored 11 times himself.

As a sophomore, he completed 62 passes for 957 yards for 18 touchdowns, setting a school record. He finished among the Eastern and national leaders in every phase of offense with a net gain of 1,134 yards in 184 plays. He was named to the AP All-Pennsylvania second team, made honorable mention All-East and Little All-America, and was a co-recipient of the most valuable small college player award in the ECAC. In 1954, he completed 29 of 70 passes for 401 yards and four touchdowns and, as a senior, he completed 30 passes for 499 yards and five scores.

In addition to his passing powers, he was a top-notch runner and excellent pass defender as a defensive back.
