Hall of Athletic Honor
Two minutes and 30 seconds into the second overtime period of a scoreless 1980 national championship field hockey game, Paparone attempted and converted perhaps the biggest shot in Gettysburg's athletic history. Her penalty-stroke goal not only gave the Bullets a 1-0 victory over Hartwick, but also gave the College its first national championship team.
A three-year letterwinner with the field hockey team, she scored a pair of goals as the squad's starting center back in 1979 and helped the Bullets win the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) championship. Following the season, she was named to the MAC Southern Division first team.
As a senior captain in 1980, she became one of the team's top scoring threats, finishing the season with 11 goals and one assist to again earn All-MAC honors and lead Gettysburg to another MAC title. Before netting the game-winner in the national finals, she scored twice in the first round of the AIAW tournament to cement her reputation as one of the game's top clutch performers.
In addition to her field hockey accomplishments, she was also a four-year letterwinner and the top doubles player with the women's tennis team. Gettysburg went 43-10 during her four seasons, winning a share of the 1978 MAC championship.
A native of Ambler, Pa., she graduated from Gettysburg in 1981 with a degree in sociology.
