Hall of Athletic Honor
When he entered college he was a 21-year old veteran of World War II. An entire football system was changed to accommodate this young player with the powerful arm. He became the quarterback in Hen Bream's new T formation. Under the system, he finished second among the nation's small college passers. As a senior, he set several school records as he completed 65 passes for 15 touchdowns and 1,280 yards. During his collegiate career, he completed 148 of 310 passes for 2,396 yards and 29 touchdowns.
Despite all the records, his most soaring performance came in 1949 against Bucknell, a team that had not seen a TD pass thrown against it. He threw five that day, including one at the gun, producing a 34-33 Bullet Victory.
He was a home grown product from Gettysburg High School. He was named the Outstanding Junior and Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.
