As a player and a coach at Gettysburg College,
Kim Rain ’92 knew how to get the most out of her volleyball teammates and players. Rain was a four-year starter as a setter for the volleyball team. Gettysburg won at least 40 matches in three of her four seasons, including a school record 45 in 1989. Rain revolutionized the setter position and served as a catalyst for the Bullets’ high-powered attack. In 1990, she was named All-Middle Atlantic Conference First Team after leading the team with over six assists per set.

“Kim was a setter coming in as a freshman player and she took that position and evolved it,” noted head equipment manager and long-time friend
Kelly Jones. “Her ability to lead the team in that critical position of setting, she showed her leadership very early as a freshman.”
In 1991, the Irwin, Pa., native helped Gettysburg finish with 42 wins and gain entrance into the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time in program history. She paced the team once again in assists and finished as the program’s all-time leader with over 2,000.
Following graduation, Rain remained with the program for the next 13 years, first as an assistant and later as head coach. During that time, Gettysburg racked up nearly 400 victories and 10 Centennial Conference championships. In nine years at the helm, Rain posted a record of 250-82 (.752 winning percentage), including 84-6 in conference matches. Gettysburg won eight conference titles and earned eight bids to the national tournament during her career at the helm.
After winning the Centennial title in 2004, Rain left Gettysburg to assume head coaching duties at Carnegie Mellon University. In her 13 years with the Tartans, she has compiled more than 230 wins and has reached the NCAA playoffs twice. In her nearly three decades as a collegiate player and coach, Rain has helped her teams win almost 800 contests.
“Kim Rain deserves to be in the Hall of Honor because she exemplifies ‘Do Great Work,’” said Jones. “She is truly Gettysburg Great.”
