Samantha Chereb possessed a versatile skillset that put her in a league of her own on the volleyball court.
Â
At 5-7, Chereb wasn’t the tallest player on the court, but she more than made up for it with dynamic jumping ability and superior defensive skills. After helping the team post a program-record 45 victories as a freshman, Chereb led the team in kills (447) and digs (482) on the way to being named All-Middle Atlantic Conference Southwest League in 1990.
Â
Chereb’s versatility was on full display in 1991 when she served as the team’s second setter. The junior was honored as All-East Region First Team after racking up a career-high 502 kills and she finished second on the team with 541 assists and 134 aces. Gettysburg won 42 matches and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time in program history.
Â
All-conference honors followed a senior season that saw Chereb average more than four kills and five digs per set in 1992. She finished her career as the program’s career leader in kills (1,685), digs (1,343), and aces (454).
Â
Chereb also spent two seasons on the basketball team. She was second on the team in scoring as a freshman and averaged 5.8 points per game in 45 contests.
Â
A native of East Setauket, N.Y., Chereb graduated from Gettysburg with a degree in chemistry.
