A highly competitive individual, Hulton brought immediate success to the three teams he coached during his 32 years at Gettysburg.

He took over the basketball program in 1957. In the next 20 years, his teams won 246 of their 491 games against the best in the country - Penn State, Temple, LaSalle, St. Joseph's, Villanova, Navy, Rutgers and Pitt. His 1960-61 team set a school record 19 wins and two of his teams were in the conference playoffs.

He coached baseball for four years and in 1962 took over the floundering men's tennis team. He gave Gettysburg one of its finest tennis programs in history and two of his players advanced to the NCAA championships.

In September 1983, he was elevated to director of athletics and served for six years before his retirement in 1989. During that time, Bream-Wright-Houser Athletic Complex was renovated.
