His baseball career was limited because of his love for track. His track accomplishments were of staggering proportions. In 1914 he recorded a long jump record of 23'3 1/2" which stood until the close of the 20th century.
He was an exceptional sprinter, running a leg on the mile relay team which turned in a 3:40.1 clocking in the Penn Relays. During his collegiate career, he also set records in the 100-yard dash in 9.8 seconds; the 220-yard dash in 21.4 seconds; and the 440-yard run in 52.8 seconds.
