He was regarded by his coaches as one of the finest guards to ever play at Gettysburg. He was smart, strong, could diagnose plays well and had tremendous courage. He was one of the most feared punt blockers of the time.

He came from Ocean City, N.J., and played right in the middle of the action as a 5'8", 167-pounder. He received as much recognition as the running backs of his day. A 60-minute player, he was a key defensive performer in Gettysburg's stunning 14-13 win over powerful Delaware in 1952. Many claimed that he made one-third of all tackles his senior year. Despite giving up 20 to 50 pounds each game, he missed only one tackle where he made the initial contact.

He was named to the All-State team in both his junior and senior years and received honorable mention Little All-America.

His talents turned to track and field in the spring where he was outstanding in the shot put and discus.
